Why AI Bias Matters for Everyone
Artificial Intelligence is everywhere from recommending movies on Netflix to screening job applications. But what happens when the algorithms behind these tools carry bias? AI systems learn from data, and data often reflects the inequalities in our society. For example, hiring tools may unintentionally favor male applicants if trained on historical company data dominated by men. Similarly, facial recognition technologies have shown higher error rates for people with darker skin tones, raising concerns about fairness and justice. Bias in AI isn’t just a technical issue it’s a social one. It can influence who gets a job, who is approved for housing, or even how communities are policed. This is why diversity in AI development is crucial. When teams designing algorithms represent different genders, cultures, and backgrounds, the technology is more likely to serve everyone fairly. At AI & Bias, our mission is to make these issues visible, provide practical tools to understand them, and create opportunities for communities to participate in shaping responsible AI.
